A year ago, thousands of thinkers, artists, activists, and other heroic saboteurs of the status quo gathered to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Dame Anita Roddick, who would be 66 on 23 October 2008.

In the intervening 12 months, thousands of you have heeded our call to stand up and be counted. Anita would be proud. We are proud, and grateful.

But there is more to do, and we want to honor her never-give-up spirit today, on her birthday. We ask you to join us in writing letters of support to the Angola 3.

Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King were prison activists in the early 1970s who were silenced by prison officials with false convictions and decades of solitary confinement in Angola Prison, Louisiana, USA.

Robert was freed in 2001 after 29 years in solitary but Herman and Albert remain behind bars, guilty of nothing more than agitating for better conditions inside America’s bloodiest prison.

But thanks to your efforts, and the efforts of their attorneys and families, freedom seems close at hand for them, too.

Let’s not let Herman and Albert spend another one of their birthdays behind bars. Right now, their legal situation is tense but hopeful, and what they need from us is our love, support, and solidarity.
